10 Questions with Celebrity Plastic Surgeon Dr. Paul Nassif

Dr Paul Nassif with his skincare line

I want to first of all say that Dr. Nassif was one of my favorite characters in The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and when he left the show after three seasons, I was crushed. But then came Botched, his reality series on E! co-hosted by fellow Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. Terry Dubrow. I was finally able to get my Dr. Nassif fix again—anyone who's watched the show can attest to the fact that he's downright good television. And for the many people whose lives he's changed on the show, he's an even better surgeon.

We asked our community to send over their burning questions for Dr. Nassif, following our reward drop of his skincare line. You guys asked about RHOBH, Botched, his own skincare routine, and more—here's what he had to say.

Why skincare from a Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon? “As a Doctor who peels back the layers of the skin, I see firsthand the effects that environmental aggressors have on the skin—aggressors that lead to pre-mature aging, leave the skin dehydrated, lacking collagen and elasticity and incapable of adequate cell turnover. In fact, before facial surgery many of my patients are required to engage in an exfoliation and hydration regimen for 4-6 weeks to help repair the skin and restore elasticity–after all, dry, dehydrated skin isn’t pliable or easily manipulated, which is critical during facial surgery. It was this exfoliation and hydration regimen that I created for my patients that led to formulating NassifMD Dermaceuticals.

After noticing an increase in young patients to my medical spas, I quickly realized the concurrence of electronic device usage starting at a very young age, everyday environmental aggressors worsened by climate change and now face masks and maskne being the new norm, young people need a simple and effective skincare regimen to support the health of their skin as|if it were not under constant assault. The as|if® by nassif 3 Step Regimen is formulated with my proprietary peptide complex and healthy botanicals to promote smooth, radiant, hydrated, healthy skin. For all skin types."

What is your skincare routine? “I confess, I’ve become a skincare junkie! I use my NassifMD Hydrating Cleanser, Detox Pads, Antioxidant Day and Night Serums. Hydro-Screen and my Deco-Lift Neck Cream! I’ve got my boys into the as|if cleanser too!”

What are your favorite products from each range? “If I had to choose, I would say my NassifMD Detox Pads and the as|if Exfoliating Cleanser & Mask. I am a firm believer in exfoliation and cell turnover. My Detox Pads are my #1 selling product, used by everyone from pubescent teen to senior citizen. I have 3 teenage boys and we all use them, including my wife Brittany. The Exfoliating Mask and Cleanser is multipurpose. It can be used as a daily cleanser, overnight spot treatment for any blemishes or sudden breakouts, or as a mask to help deep clean pores and exfoliate the skin without AHA’s and BHA’s, that can be irritating to young skin."

Do people on the street ask you what they should get done surgically, because of Botched? What do you usually tell them? “Often! I always suggest that they do their homework and learn everything they can about the procedure. Have consultations with two to three different doctors and compare their knowledge and strategy for meeting your goals. Also, consider who you feel most comfortable with but most importantly understand why you want the surgery to begin with. In today’s world I see a lot of obsessive-compulsive or body-dysmorphic disorders and that’s the wrong reason to have elective surgery.”

How has being on the show Botched affected your daily life? “Wow, in so many positive ways. Most importantly, I get to change people’s lives and I my skills are constantly evolving since I’m doing incredibly complicated and risky facial surgeries. And, I get to be a celebrity! It is fun but you lose your anonymity. All in all, it’s a once in a lifetime chance and I’m blessed that I have it.”

What is the Number 1 most important thing you can do for your skin when it comes to anti-aging? “Protecting your skin from environmental aggressors such as UV light and blue light is one of the easiest and most effective anti-aging habits you can have. The moment a patient comes into my office, I can tell if they have over-exposed their skin to sun. I recommend antioxidant serums followed by sunscreen SPF30 or higher every day.”

What was your favorite Real Housewives beauty transformation? “When I did a facelift on Dr. Estella Sneider, Kyle [Richards]’s mother in law, using my signature Beverly Hills Facelift. It was an incredible and very natural transformation!”

What age should one start incorporating retinol? “It all depends on your skincare habits early in life. Let us act as if you started a basic skincare regimen in your teens, then I would say you can incorporate retinol in your thirties since that’s typically when collagen starts to decrease. If you did not take particularly good care of your skin in your early years, I can see the benefits of retinol in your twenties.”

What are your recommendations for acne scars? “A regular exfoliation regimen such as the NassifMD Detox Pads or the as|if Exfoliating Cleanser / Mask will help fade acne scars, especially the discoloration of newer ones. In addition, many products have Ethyl Ascorbic acid and Sytenol A (a kinder, gentler version of Retinol) will help too.”

Are any of your skincare line's products work on hyperpigmentation? “Yes, many of my NassifMD products have Vitamin C, AHA’s and BHA’s, all of which are known to help brighten and even skin tone, including my Detox Pads.”

Do yourselves a favor and give Dr. Nassif a follow if you love a satisfying Before & After, or if you're just looking for a laugh.
