Hi, I'm Jess. Can I interest you in one of the best natural beauty ingredients ever? Maybe you haven’t tried this one yet: turmeric. You might be thinking, “my mum cooks with that, whut?” Let me explain, and sorry in advance for the biology lesson.
Turmeric is a plant in the ginger family, which is why it has such distinctive bright coloring. It's native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, which explains its long history in ancient Indian Ayurvedic practices.
The use of turmeric goes back thousands of years. Yes girl, THOUSANDS. People have long been using it for just about everything and it's basically the Swiss army knife of plants: it's food, dye for your clothes, health and beauty products, and it's used in cultural ceremonies.
Turmeric has a long list of touted beauty benefits, including:
- Brightens and evens out skin tone
- Helps manage eczema and psoriasis
- Reduces the appearance of acne scarring
- Hydrates dry skin
- Anti-aging properties
Some (brave) women have even tested turmeric as an all-natural self-tanner, but unless you want to look like a walking piece of saffron, I don’t recommend it. I've been using the ingredient over the last few years to help fade dark marks and brighten my complexion, neck, and décolletage. I use an all-natural turmeric mask twice a week and I swear by it—it fades my hyperpigmentation, shrinks my gigantic pores, and makes my night cream go on smoother.
Turmeric started gaining some serious steam in the last few years; thanks to some of our favorite beauty gurus sharing their DIY concoctions. Companies have taken note and we’ve seen an uptick in products with this magical beauty ingredient. There are so many brands with a turmeric-based product on the market.
