I've always been cautious of going with the flow, especially when the “flow” dictates that we all begin to color-coordinate with the dead leaves covering the ground. Fall is one of the two beautiful buffer seasons of the year and, taking that into account, a new and equally beautiful color has emerged as the season's mascot: violet.
Ultra Violet, Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2018, has finally caught up with beauty, becoming the centerpiece for fall launches including Colourpop’s Lilac Collection. The color is often lauded for its success on all skin tones and it's finally seeing the light amidst the wider conversation on inclusivity and diversity in the beauty industry.
“Ultra Violet is the most complex of all colors…Because it takes two shades that are seemingly diametrically opposed—blue and red—and brings them together to create something new,” says Pantone Institute's Leatrice Eiseman. This “complex” color not only helps solve the complex problem of universal skin tone flattery, but has also been a favorite to some of the most complex folks in history. Fun(ish) fact: Queen Elizabeth I outlawed the wear of the color violet for anyone except those in the royal family. Huh.
With shades of berries, mauves, and plums seeping into makeup launches this fall, how will you incorporate the color of the season into your winter beauty? Add your review of your favorite ultra violet product below—here are mine!
